Our Story
Gibraltar Mailboxes® was founded in 2005 by John Smith, a lifelong tinkerer and inventor. John grew up in rural Iowa, where the only way to get mail was through a battered old mailbox at the end of a long driveway. He remembers waiting eagerly by the box each day for packages and letters, only to be disappointed when the mail carrier couldn’t fit them into the small, rusted receptacle.
As an adult, John set out to design a better residential mailbox. After months of sketches and prototypes, he developed the first Gibraltar Mailbox – a durable, vandal-proof box that kept mail safe from the elements. John took his creation to the 2005 National Hardware Show, where he expected some interest from small hardware stores. Instead, he was met with overwhelming demand from across the country.
Realizing the need for high-quality mailboxes nationwide, John recruited his family and friends to begin hand-making Gibraltar Mailboxes in his two-car garage. Word spread quickly about these American-made mailboxes, built to last a lifetime. Before he knew it, John was struggling to keep up with orders.
In 2007, Gibraltar Mailboxes® moved to its first facility and bought industrial equipment to ramp up production. Over the next decade, we expanded our product line to include decorative mailboxes, commercial mailboxes, locking mailboxes, package boxes, and parcel drops.
Today, Gibraltar Mailboxes® operates a 35,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Iowa City, Iowa. We ship over 50,000 mailboxes each year across the United States. Our patented designs withstand the elements and deter mailbox vandals. We continually refine our products to offer the best residential and commercial mailboxes on the market.

Our Facility
Our 35,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution facility is located in Iowa City, Iowa. This dedicated plant allows us to manufacture all Gibraltar® products in-house and ship them directly to customers.

- 15,000 square foot manufacturing floor: All of our mailbox designs are fabricated from aluminum or galvanized steel sheets into parts, then powder coated and assembled on-site into finished products.
- 10,000 square foot warehouse: Raw materials and finished products are stocked in our large warehouse, allowing us to fulfill orders rapidly.
- State-of-the-art machinery: We use advanced CNC turret punch machines, press brakes, and powder coating systems to craft precision mailboxes.
- In-house design team: Our on-site engineers refine existing models and develop new mailbox and accessory concepts.
- Quality assurance team: Each mailbox goes through multiple quality checks before being approved for sale.
